As I was getting this issue together, I thought a lot about the past year and the goals and resolutions I made for myself heading into 2009. I didn’t know at the time that this would be a year of change for me, both personally and professionally. Some of those changes were tough, and I find myself grateful for all the “mothers” in my life. My mother and my step-mother, both with good heads for business, contributed their helpful advice; my mother-in-law gave me a financial vote of confidence; and my sister, who has always functioned as a kind of second mother/good friend listened, sympathized, and encouraged me.
I was also helped by all kinds of other mothers: my oldest friend who is a new mother and reminds me of that very special time with my children, and my newest friend, who is a mother to a freshman in high school who gives me courage to face the years ahead. Other friends who don’t have children make me a better mother by helping me keep my own identity so that my children have a strong and independent role model.
I find inspiration in women who have started businesses and are reaching for their entrepreneurial goals, while managing to keep their focus on being caring mothers. I am so encouraged by all the women who work to help other families and to make Charleston and the world a better place for our children.
As I look ahead to 2010, I resolve to make this publication and website a community that does what it can to bring all of these mothers together. When we share our unique experiences, perspectives, and goals, we all become a little bit more “in the know.”
